Petra Lindholm

CV     ARTIST STATEMENT

Petra Lindholm was born in Finland, in 1973. She studied at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm and is currently living and working in Sweden. Petra is primarily a visual artist, whose career is rooted in video, sound and photography. In recent years, she has widened her practice to include textile paintings.

Petra’s work is multi-layered and filled with recurring themes. Her poetic narratives describe memories and depict the passage of Time – often explored as an abstract notion in the artist’s work. The artist’s video work forms an intimate relationship between image and sound, by employing her own voice and musical compositions.

In her more recent works -the textile paintings- we happily encounter familiar themes from earlier works. These paintings -often representational, depicting landscapes- flirt with romanticism, and explore humanity through the lens of contemporary culture. They take us on a journey of self-discovery, and touch on issues that are easily contacted back to ourselves. In their midst, we are acutely aware of Nature as a powerful force  and find ourselves suspended between an urge to succumb to its power over us, and a sense of self-empowerment.
